Q Terminology

Methadone is a synthetic drug that very similar to morphine, but lasts longer. Methadone is taken orally through a liquid or pill. It’s used as an alternative drug to treat heroin and morphine addiction.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment is the medically-supervised use of methadone used to reduce the cravings for opioids. While methadone is a synthetic opioid, it is still addictive, but healthcare research has proven that it is still better than heroin or other illegal substances that has the risks of leading to criminal activity and diseases spread from dirty needles.

Methadone Detoxification Treatment is necessary when, during the first step of heroin addiction, a patient becomes addicted to methadone after high doses and lengthy uses. Withdrawal from a strong addiction from methadone or other painkillers can lead to similar characteristics of that from heroin, such as heart problems, seizures, and trouble breathing. Buprenorphine and Suboxone are other drugs used during methadone detoxification treatment, which have more manageable side-effects.

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid used as a preferred drug to wean off of heroin, morphine or methadone. Suboxone is the trademarked name of this drug. It’s used because the drug is designed to reduce dramatic symptoms from withdrawal, versus methadone.

Nalaxone is the drug used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Narcan® is one of the commercial names for the drug, which is often used by first responders of an overdose. It has as an anti-opioid.

Naltrexon is a drug used to decrease the desire for alcohol and opioids. Brand names commonly sold are ReVia and Vivitrol. It can be taken orally or injected and takes effects in about 30 mins. It has a longer term effect and for managed treatment vs Nalaxone, which is used for immediate emergency use.
